Simulator exercise

Objective:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in operating RADAR to detect targets, assess collision risks

Scenario:

  1. Ship: Two vessels, a tanker and a container ship, are approaching each other in a narrow channel.
  1. Weather Conditions: Start with normal weather, add weather effects like rain and fog to increase difficulty level

Tasks:

  • Radar Setup: Ensure that the radar is properly calibrated and set to the appropriate range and scan rate for the current situation.
  • Target Detection: Use the radar to detect other vessels, buoys, and navigational hazards in the area.
  • Target Tracking: Track the course and speed of detected targets.
  • Collision Risk Assessment: Evaluate the risk of collision with any detected targets using the radar’s range and bearing information.

Evaluation:

  • Target Detection: The trainee should be able to accurately detect and identify various targets on the radar screen.
  • Target Tracking: The trainee should be able to track the course and speed of detected targets effectively.
  • Collision Risk Assessment: The trainee should be able to accurately assess the risk of collision and take appropriate evasive action.
  • Weather Monitoring: The trainee should be able to use radar to monitor weather conditions and make informed decisions about the ship’s course and speed.
