Competence 18 Application of leadership & teamworking skills

International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR)

The International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) was established to develop an international framework for coordinating search and rescue operations at sea. The convention delineates responsibilities among nations and provides guidelines for conducting effective SAR missions to save lives in distress situations.

Seafarers must be prepared to participate in search and rescue operations, understanding the protocols for communication and coordination with SAR authorities. This includes knowing how to alert rescue services and working in tandem with other vessels or aircraft during SAR missions.

Distress:

Seafarers must ensure that they are ready to respond quickly and effectively in emergencies to maximise the chances of saving lives. Familiarity and proficiency in the use of SAR equipment, such as lifeboats, life rafts, and man overboard procedures, is essential.
