KUP 16 Have knowledge of blind pilotage techniques
Seafarers shall have an understanding of blind pilotage techniques and be able to proficiently use navigational instruments and systems to safely navigate a vessel in conditions of restricted visibility.
Blind pilotage refers to the navigation of a vessel without relying on visual references, typically under conditions of restricted visibility such as fog, heavy rain, darkness, or snow. In such situations, the ability to navigate safely and effectively becomes critically dependent on the use of electronic navigational aids and instruments such as radar (which is very important when the visibility is restricted), Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), AIS and depth sounders.
Navigating without visual cues increases the risk of errors, such as misinterpreting radar echoes or failing to maintain situational awareness due to over-reliance on a single instrument. Therefore, proficiency in this situation requires not only technical skill in using these tools but also a deep understanding of how to integrate and cross-check information from multiple sources to minimize the risk of errors.
