Competence 2 Maintain a safe navigational watch

October 3, 2024

Maintaining a safe navigational watch is one of the most critical responsibilities on board a vessel. It involves the continuous monitoring and management of the ship’s position, speed, and course to ensure safe passage from one location to another. A safe navigational watch is essential for preventing collisions, groundings, and other maritime incidents, which could endanger the vessel, crew, cargo, and the marine environment.

As future officers and watchkeepers, mastering this competence means developing a deep understanding of the principles, practices, and regulations that govern watchkeeping. This includes knowledge of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), understanding the use of navigational aids, and the ability to maintain situational awareness at all times.

A safe navigational watch also requires effective communication and teamwork on the bridge, ensuring that all members of the watch are aware of their duties and responsibilities. Additionally, it involves the proper use of all available navigational tools and technology, such as radar, AIS, ECDIS, and GPS, to monitor the vessel’s surroundings and respond appropriately to changing conditions.
