Simulator exercise
Objective:
- Demonstrate how to execute a Williamson turn
Scenario:
- Ship: A cargo ship sailing at approximately speed of 16 knots and course 050°.
- Weather Conditions: Wind speed of 4 knots from SSW(200°) and wave height of 0.5 knots. Good weather with clear skies and good visibility.
- Navigational Aids: Use a desktop or full mission simulator
Tasks:
- Ability to carry out a safe passage, considering all relevant sources of information.
- Show knowledge about ship handling and the use of bridge equipment.
- Identify the situation (MOB) and conduct a correct turn of the vessel to pick up the MOB.
- Keep the ship safe and navigate in accordance with the International regulations for preventing collisions at sea, also while conducting correct procedure for MOB
- Search and Rescue: If necessary, initiate a search and rescue operation to locate the person or vessel in distress.
- Logbook entry: Record the incident in the ship’s logbook, including the time of the SART detection, actions taken, and any relevant information
Evaluation:
- Prompt Response: The student should respond to the MOB signal promptly.
- Communication: The student should effectively communicate with the appropriate authorities and coordinate the rescue operation.
- Search and Rescue Procedures: The student should follow proper search and rescue procedures, including using appropriate search patterns and equipment.
- The student should demonstrate Williamson’s turn efficiently.
- Documentation: The trainee should accurately document the incident in the ship’s logbook.
