Simulator exercise
Objective:
- Demonstrate proficiency in transmitting and receiving visual signals, including (hand signals and) flag signals
Scenario:
- Ship: Two vessels, a tanker and a container ship, are approaching each other in a narrow channel.
- Weather Conditions: Dense fog has reduced visibility to less than 200 meters.
- Navigational Aids: Use a desktop or full mission simulator
Tasks:
- Transmit the appropriate visual signals to indicate the vessel’s intentions or course. Use different conditions
- Avoiding a collision
- Requesting assistance
- Indicate vessel’s status (anchor, loss of power, bunkering etc)
- Reception: Observe and correctly interpret visual signals from other vessels
- Response: Take appropriate action based on the received signals, such as altering course or speed.
Evaluation:
- Correct Signal Usage: The trainee should accurately transmit and receive the required visual signals.
- Communication Effectiveness: The trainee should be able to effectively convey their intentions and understand the signals from other vessels.
- Situational Awareness: The trainee should maintain situational awareness and use visual signals appropriately based on the circumstances.
