Simulator exercise

Objective:  

• To enhance ship handling skills in different conditions 

Scenario: 

• Ship: A single screw tanker ship  

• Z- path manoeuvring:  
  • A Z- shaped course with 90 or 45 degree turns 
  •  

• Weather Conditions: Start with  

• Wind conditions 
  • No wind and current 
  • Consistent wind from any one direction 
  • Shifting wind direction and intensity 
  • Gusts with high-speed wind 

• Current conditions 
  • Calm water 
  • Steady current in a specific direction 
  • Changing current due to tides 

• Obstacles: A few obstacles can be placed to increase the difficulty level 
  • Buoys 
  • Restricted areas 
  • Near-by ship 

• Navigational Aids: Use a desktop or full mission simulator 

Tasks: 

• Steer the ship through the obstacle course while maintaining a safe distance from obstacles. 

• Adjust the speed of ship to carry out the turns effectively. 

 Evaluation: 

• Record the time take to complete each task 

• Measure deviation from the intended course or path 

• Assess distance to obstacles
