Simulator exercise
Objective:
- Demonstrate proficiency in operating an ECDIS to navigate a vessel safely
Tasks:
- Start with a blank chart: Begin with a blank chart screen on the ECDIS.
- Select appropriate chart: Choose the correct chart covering the vessel’s intended voyage area. Ensure that the chart is up-to-date and suitable for the vessel’s type and size.
- Display vessel information: Input the vessel’s position, course, speed, and other relevant information into the ECDIS.
- Activate layers: Determine which chart layers are necessary for safe navigation and activate them. This may include:
- Nautical charts: Base charts showing the seabed, coastlines, and navigation aids.
- ENCs (Electronic Navigational Charts): Digital charts with detailed information about the area.
- Radar overlay: Integration of radar data to display targets and hazards.
- AIS (Automatic Identification System) data: Information about other vessels in the area.
- Weather information: Meteorological data such as wind speed, direction, and wave height.
Evaluation:
- Correct chart selection: The trainee should choose the appropriate chart for the vessel’s location and intended route.
- Accurate vessel information input: The trainee should accurately input the vessel’s position, course, speed, and other relevant data.
- Layer selection: The trainee should select the necessary chart layers to ensure safe navigation.
- Effective use of ECDIS features: The trainee should demonstrate proficiency in using various ECDIS functions, such as zooming, panning, measuring distances, and setting alarms.
