KUP 27 Ability to take initial actions following a collision or a grounding; and ability to assess initial damage and perform control
A collision is a violent impact between two moving vessels, or between a moving vessel and a stationary object (technically known as allision). Collisions can be caused by various factors, including human error (misjudgment, negligence, fatigue), mechanical failure, poor visibility, inadequate communication, or navigational errors.
Ship grounding occurs when a vessel hits the seabed, potentially causing damage to its underwater hull and bottom structure. This can lead to water entering the ship, compromising its structural integrity and stability. Beaching, on the other hand, is a deliberate grounding of the vessel to facilitate repairs. This action is typically taken when a ship has been holed or is taking on water, and the nearest port is too far to reach safely. Beaching requires careful consideration of the coastline to minimize further damage.
Grounding (or stranding) occurs when a ship runs aground, coming into contact with the seabed or other underwater obstacles. Grounding can be caused by navigational errors, mechanical failures (loss of propulsion or steering), extreme weather conditions, or uncharted hazards. Both collisions and grounding can cause significant damage to the ship’s hull, machinery, and cargo. It can also lead to oil spills, environmental damage, and economic losses.
Learning objectives
Actions to be taken in Case of Collision:
- Stop engines and sound the general alarm, including the fire alarm if necessary.
- Gather the emergency team and distribute protective gear (life jackets, life rafts, breathing apparatus if needed).
- Prepare for or initiate firefighting measures in case of fire.
- Muster the crew, search for missing persons, and alert relevant departments about potential dangers like power loss or instability.
- Secure all watertight doors to contain any flooding.
- Prepare the rescue boat for launch, search for survivors, and assess hull damage and its impact on stability.
- Evaluate potential pollution from ruptured fuel or cargo tanks and take action to minimize it, then report the incident.
Master’s Legal Responsibilities After a Collision:
- Immediate Actions:
- Standby: Remain at the scene to offer aid to the other vessel and its crew/passengers.
- Information Exchange: Share details with the other ship’s master, including:
- Vessel names and identification
- Ports of departure and destination
- Reporting:
- Official Log: Document the incident thoroughly in the ship’s logbook.
- MAIB: Report the accident to the Marine Accident Investigation Bureau (MAIB).
External Communication
Distress/Urgency Signals: Transmit distress signals if necessary.
Other Vessel: Continue communication with the other vessel involved.
Additional Contacts: Notify the following parties as needed:
- Company, owners, charterers
- AMVER (Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System)
- Coast Guard/Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC)
- Port of refuge agents
- Tugs/Towing services
- Dry docking facilities
- Weather reporting services
Every ship has an engine room crucial for the main propulsion system and power generation. Following are the actions to be taken in case of Engine Room Flooding:
- Stop engines and sound the general alarm.
- Check water levels in double bottom spaces, cofferdams, etc.
- Close all watertight doors.
- Assess hull damage and stability.
- Evaluate potential effects on cargo.
- Prepare lifeboats for launch and take any other necessary measures.
Immediate Actions Upon Ship Grounding:
- Stop engines and sound the general alarm to alert the crew.
- Check the water levels in all double bottom spaces and cofferdams.
- Prepare for refloating efforts and secure all watertight doors.
- Assess the extent of damage to the hull and the ship’s stability.
- Evaluate the potential impact on cargo.
- Determine the depth of the shoal, the composition of the seabed, and the direction of deeper water.
- If feasible, jettison cargo to lighten the ship.
- Prepare lifeboats for launch and carry out any other necessary actions.
