4.1 Lighthouses, Buoys, and Beacons

  • Lighthouses: Lighthouses are tall structures located on coastlines or islands that emit light signals to guide mariners. They provide a visual reference point, especially during darkness or adverse weather conditions. Lighthouses have distinct characteristics such as color, pattern, and range, enabling mariners to identify their locations.
  • Buoys: Buoys are floating devices anchored at specific locations in waterways. They come in various shapes, sizes, and colors, and they serve different purposes. Navigational buoys can indicate safe channels, mark hazards, or provide other navigational information. They often have reflective markings and lights for visibility.
  • Beacons: Beacons are fixed navigational aids that can be located on land or at sea. They assist mariners by providing a reference point or marking specific locations. Beacons can be tall structures, poles, or platforms with distinct markings or lights. They are particularly useful for guiding vessels into ports or along coastal areas.
