4.3 Radar and AIS (Automatic Identification System)

  • Radar: Radar (Radio Detection and Ranging) is a navigation technology that uses radio waves to detect and track objects, including other vessels, land masses, and weather systems. It provides mariners with real-time information on the position, distance, and speed of nearby objects. Radar helps in collision avoidance, identifying navigation hazards, and determining the relative movement of vessels.
  • AIS (Automatic Identification System): AIS is a system that utilizes VHF radio frequencies to exchange information between vessels and shore stations. It provides vessels with real-time data on the identification, position, course, speed, and other details of nearby ships. AIS enhances situational awareness, aids in collision avoidance, and improves vessel traffic management.
