2.1 Types and Components of Nautical Charts
Nautical charts are specialized maps designed for safe navigation at sea. They provide detailed information about water depths, coastlines, landmarks, navigational aids, and hazards. Key topics covered in this module include:
- Paper Charts: Traditional paper charts are printed on a large scale and used on board ships. They provide a visual representation of the waterway and its surroundings, including depth contours, buoys, and landmarks.
- Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs): ENC is a digital format of nautical charts used with Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS). ENC offers real-time updating, interactive features, and integration with other navigational data.
- Chart Components: Nautical charts consist of various elements, such as the title block, scale, legend, compass rose, and grid system. Understanding these components helps mariners interpret and utilize the information provided on the chart.
