Competence 17 Monitor compliance with legislative requirement
In the maritime industry, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements is a fundamental aspect of safe and efficient vessel operation. As future officers and crew members, it is your responsibility to be well-versed in the various international, national, and company-specific regulations that govern maritime activities. These regulations are in place to safeguard the safety of life at sea, protect the marine environment, and ensure the fair and legal conduct of operations.
Compliance monitoring involves regularly checking and verifying that all aspects of the vessel’s operations adhere to these legal requirements. This includes, but is not limited to, following the International Maritime Organization (IMO) conventions such as SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea), MARPOL (Marine Pollution), and STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers). It also involves understanding and applying flag state and port state control regulations, as well as any specific rules set by the company you work for.
As you develop this competence, you will learn how to effectively monitor various aspects of the ship’s operation, ensure that all necessary documentation and certifications are up-to-date, and that the vessel and crew are always prepared for inspections and audits. You will also learn the importance of staying informed about any updates or changes to relevant legislation, as maritime laws and regulations are constantly evolving.
