Competence 6: Respond to distress signal at sea

Simulator exercise

Objective:  

  • Demonstrate proficiency in responding to a SART (Search and Rescue Transponder) signal on radar 

Tasks: 

  • SART detection: A SART signal is detected on the radar screen. 
  • Verification: verify the SART signal to ensure it is not a false alarm or interference. 
  • Emergency Response: Activate the ship’s emergency procedures and alert the bridge team. 
  • Communication: Contact the appropriate rescue authorities (e.g., JRCC) to report the SART signal and provide the vessel’s position 
  • Search and Rescue: If necessary, initiate a search and rescue operation to locate the person or vessel in distress. 
  • Logbook entry: Record the incident in the ship’s logbook, including the time of the SART detection, actions taken, and any relevant information 

Evaluation: 

  • Prompt Response: The student should respond to the SART signal in a timely manner. 
  • Communication: The student should effectively communicate with the appropriate authorities and coordinate the rescue operation. 
  • Search and Rescue Procedures: The student should follow proper search and rescue procedures, including using appropriate search patterns and equipment. 
  • Documentation: The trainee should accurately document the incident in the ship’s logbook.
