Learning objective
The learning objective is to thoroughly understand radar and ARPA systems and their applications in maintaining navigational safety. Students will gain knowledge of the basic principles and components of radar and ARPA, as well as the operational concepts necessary for effective use. They will learn to operate radar equipment proficiently, including accurately identifying and interpreting radar displays.
Understanding ARPA functionalities and data processing is crucial, as is the ability to use ARPA for tracking and collision avoidance. Students will be trained to utilize radar and ARPA data to maintain safe navigation and apply effective collision avoidance strategies. Adapting radar settings to environmental conditions and recognizing the limitations imposed by weather and sea state are key skills to be developed.
Compliance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) is emphasized, ensuring students understand the legal responsibilities associated with radar operation. The ability to utilize radar and ARPA effectively in emergencies, including navigation in restricted visibility, is also covered.
Students will learn to integrate radar data with other navigational tools, such as GPS and ECDIS, to enhance situational awareness. Continuous monitoring of radar and ARPA displays is crucial, along with making necessary adjustments to maintain optimal performance. Critical thinking and decision-making skills will be honed, enabling students to analyze radar data, evaluate risks, and ensure the safety of the vessel and crew.
